eyebolts - Product Information

There are three main types of eyebolts for lifting purposes under current British Standards.

  • Metric Collared Eyebolts in accordance to BS4278 Part 1 1984.
  • Metric Eyebolts with Links to BS4278 Part 2 1984.
  • Metric Dynamo Eyebolts in accordance to BS4278 Part 3 1984.

BS4278 : 1984 has superseded the requirements of BS4728 : 1968 and BS529 Part which has been withdrawn.  But eyebolts to the older standards still remain.

BS529 1944 Part 1 covered BSW and UNC threaded collared eyebolts.  It also covered BSW and Metric threaded long shank eyebolts.

Collared eyebolts are designed for both axial and angular loading and Lifting Tackle Suppliers Ltd supply a capacity range of 0.10t to 12.50t SWL in metric sizes of 6mm to 52mm.  Imperial threaded versions are available in a capacity range of 0.10 tons to 30 tons with corresponding thread sizes of ¼” to 3” BSW or UNC.

Eyebolts with Links are designed for both axial and angular loading.  Lifting Tackle Suppliers Ltd can supply them in a capacity range of 0.20t to 1.60t SWL, metric coarse threads of 12mm to 24mm.  Imperial threads are available upon request.

Dynamo Eyebolts are designed for axial loading only and BS4278 Table 3 1984 range is available in capacities of 0.23t to 2.00t with metric threads ranging from 10mm to 24mm.  Dynamo Eyebolts are commonly used to fit into castings of plant, such as electric motors, by their manufacturers as they form an inexpensive lifting point.  This makes them extremely limited in their use and their SWL is lower than that of an equivalent collared eyebolt.

Extreme care must be taken to ensure that the correct type of eyebolt is being used for the appropriate application.  If in any doubt then the advice of a competent person must be sort.

Eyenuts and Bownuts are not primarily intended for lifting however they are useful in certain applications.  They can only be used for axial lifting and must never be used for angular loading.  Bownuts to BS3974 Part 1 are usually produced in lower grade materials and their main usage is for pipe hanging and riggings applications.
Care must be taken in their use that the threaded bar that they are fitted to matches the SWL of the Bownut.  Also users must ensure that the stud has sufficient length of thread to fully engage on to the Eye or Bownut.

Lifting Tackle Suppliers Ltd also provide Eyenuts to the DIN582 standard.
Please take time to refer to our Eyebolt Working Load Chart to check the correct methods of lifting and maximum recommended working loads for our range of Eyebolts.
