Rigging screws also called turnbuckles are tensioning devices using right handed and left handed threads for the adjustment of tensioning in rigging or wire ropes. They are designed for straight in-line rigging, tensioning or lashing only.
The hot dipped galvanised closed body rigging screws are manufactured from mild steel and come with the following end fittings: eye/eye, eye/jaw and jaw/jaw. They vary in thread sizes from ¼” to 2” and Safe Working Loads of 0.15 tonnes to 9.50 tonnes.
Commercial pattern straining screws are manufactured from drop forged mild steel and are electro-galvanised. LTS stock them with the following end fittings: eye/eye and hook/eye with thread sizes of 5mm to 12mm. They are mainly used for minor loaded catenary work e.g; supporting small cord wire ropes and lightly loaded cabling from building to building or the tensioning of fencing wires, etc.
Hamburgers are tensioning devices which are normally used for lashing down loads on container shipping. These items are referred to as one way lashing as they are normally used once during the transportation of the goods. The 24mm threaded version has a 13 ton MBL (Minimum Breaking Load) while the 28mm size has an 18 ton MBL. Please note that the MBL is not the WLL ( Working Load Limit), the MBL has to be divided by a Factor of Safety or Co-efficient of Utilisation to allow for the pitching and rolling of the vessel.
Our load rated drop forged galvanised turnbuckles are manufactured to ASTM F1145-92, formerly US Federal Specification FFT-791 and are tested and certified. The following end fittings are available: eye/eye, hook/eye, hook/hook, eye/jaw and jaw/jaw. It is recommended that these type of turnbuckles be used for the rigging of wires, ropes, rods, etc.
The use of locknuts on rigging screws and turnbuckles when supplied to prevent them unscrewing should always be adhered to.
